A bullet journal is a versatile and customizable organizational system that offers numerous benefits for anyone looking to enhance their productivity and mindfulness. Here are some of the key advantages of using a bullet journal: One of the primary benefits of a bullet journal is its ability to promote mindfulness. By writing down tasks, thoughts, and reflections, users can gain clarity on their priorities and feelings. This practice encourages individuals to slow down and be present, fostering a deeper understanding of their goals and emotions. Another significant advantage is the flexibility it provides. Unlike traditional planners, a bullet journal can be tailored to fit your specific needs. You can create custom layouts for daily tasks, monthly goals, habit tracking, and creative elements like doodles or inspirational quotes. This adaptability allows users to experiment with different formats until they find what works best for them.
Additionally, bullet journaling can enhance productivity. The system encourages users to break down larger projects into manageable tasks, making it easier to track progress and stay motivated. By regularly reviewing and updating entries, individuals can maintain focus on their goals and celebrate their achievements, no matter how small. In summary, a bullet journal offers a unique blend of mindfulness, flexibility, and productivity enhancement. By incorporating this system into your daily routine, you can cultivate a more organized and intentional life.
My journey with bullet journaling is one paved with good intentions, motivations, and inspiration, but a lot of failure. I was putting too much pressure on myself, I wanted mine to look as perfect as the ones on Instagram and Pinterest. But, let's be honest, none of our bullet journals will look identical to others. As long as your bullet journal fits your style, and your way of doing things, and it helps you to stay organized, it's all that matters.
Let's not forget what a bullet journal is for in the beginning, it has to help you, if you feel more distress while doing it than relief, then maybe you need to take a step back.
In this article I'm going to share with you my tips, I will show you my bullet journal another time, as I want you to understand my intake on this activity.
First, it is okay to look at others' bujo online, it's good for inspiration, as long as you don't compare what you've done so far to it, or you judge your skills. Looking for inspiration is good for when you want to know what colors look good together — some of the best colors match I have been because of photos of bujo online, which I never knew would work together! It's also great to know what you don't like, for example, do you prefer shapes that are round or square? Or maybe you like to write in this font or the other? Anyway, looking online for inspiration is a good idea, you just have to remember to not compare or judge yourself!
Second, before starting right away on your bujo, make a list of the pages you want to put in there and make sure it'll be useful to you, and that you will use it. Because once it's on your bullet journal, it's final! So, don't overdo it, don't do pages just because they look good online, do them because they will help you. I don't have a lot of pages on my bujo when I look online at the number of different spreads there are, I'm impressed and yes I want to try them at the moment but then I think, "It's going to take me a lot of tries to do them, a lot of time when instead of doing that I can do spreads that are useful to me and be productive."
Once your list is done, I suggest you start your bujo with a pencil, don't put too much pressure on it, it will allow you to erase it without leaving any trace on your page, like you can have as many failures as you want, you will be free to restart!
Don't pressure yourself to do doodles, I am horrible at drawing, so I go the easy route: stickers! You can find a lot of them and pretty ones on Shein for not a lot and it's amazing! Stickers are a great way to make your bujo pretty and you win so much time with them! I suggest before putting your stickers, to draw your lines, do your whole page, and then place your stickers, I once put the stickers first and I struggled to do the calendar page!
Another mistake I made in the beginning: not having the appropriate pens. You have to choose good pens, because depending on the thickness of your pages, some of them will bleed onto the next page(s)... So choose the right ones, you can find great ones on Amazon without putting too much money, and once again, Shein is amazing for bujo supplies!
In the beginning, you will have many different styles, and it's okay! You have to try and find the one that works best for you! The bujo I just started has a different look for January than the other months, it was my try-out month, and while doing it, I found the spreads that work for me and now it goes so fast to do the rest of my bujo as I know which one to do.
And last tip but not least, make bujo cards! I have four bujo cards. One is my reference card. I have the dimensions of the calendars, so it's always the same and I don't struggle. I have the pages I want to put for each month, so I'm sure to not forget one, and in the order I want them to be, too. I have the dimensions for my trackers, so I don't have to go back and forth to make sure they're the same!
The second card is my cleaning tracker, as this tracker has multiple parts, I want to make sure I don't forget anything. I have daily tasks, weekly, after-use, monthly, and my laundry schedule!
The third card is my self-care tracker. It's pretty much the same, it's just for me to avoid forgetting an item and so I don't go back and forth on the tracker of the month before.
The fourth card is for my blog corner. I have the pages I want to have in my blog corner and the lists of the trackers' items.
Another "card" I have is for my highlighters, I have ones without anything written on them and sometimes I forget which one I used and end up having a page with colors that don't match, so I numbered my highlighters and did a card where I put them all down. A way for me to look back on it to make sure I have the right color.
In the next article about bullet journaling, I will share with you guys my bujo through photos and explain the steps I took to make it!
Again, you can email me if you want to talk about journaling, if you have questions, and more!
See you soon,
xoxo Serenity
